Gift ideas from Chiswick’s independent traders A-M

One of the things which makes Chiswick such a pleasant place to live is its quirky mix of independent shops. You can find some lovely original Christmas presents – and some highly unoriginal but oh so useful presents – and support local traders at the same time. We’ve put together a few ideas for Christmas presents from local shops.

Antiques – Strand Antiques

There are four antiques dealers who share the space, providing a veritable Aladdin’s cave of interesting items – everything from silver spoons, Victorian glassware and fine china to the classic ship in a bottle. Ann Brown has run the shop for 45 years. Vanessa Costello is the most recent dealer to join. Among her stock is militaria, including cap badges recovered from Dunkirk, and antiquities, including Ming dynasty ceramic figures.

Art – The Chiswick Calendar Art Directory

In Chiswick we are lucky to have a number of professional artists who live locally. While most have their work on display in galleries and exhibitions, they are also happy to sell from home and to arrange viewings by appointment. The Chiswick Calendar has put together a directory of artists so you can browse their work online.

Beds and Bedding – Naturalmat

W6 boasts an organic bedding shop. Naturalmat founders Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall both sail and hated the synthetic mattresses found on most yachts. They started hand-making natural fibre products which wouldn’t sweat and would fit in a boat’s awkward spaces. The birth of Mark’s first child lead to a ‘light bulb’ moment. Why not devote the same clever thinking to baby mattresses? And with that, Naturalmat was born. They only use natural materials such as organic lambswool from sheep local to their factory on Dartmoor.

Books – Foster Books

Foster Books, established in 1968, is a family-run business which has now passed to a second generation of booksellers. The oldest shop on Chiswick High Road, the building dates from the late 18th century. Fosters specialise in antiquarian books, fine bindings, illustrated children’s books and first editions, as well as a general stock leaning towards literature and the arts. Everything on their website is in the shop and despite what you might think from the photograph, it is very well organised and they will be able to find it for you!

She sells women’s clothing at her boutique De Jolie. This year, under pressure from Westfield, E-commerce and high rent and business rates, she almost folded but has decided instead to sublet part of her shop as a concession. Gabriela Pascu is now open for business with her range of children’s wear and Diane plans to reopen the rest of the shop to continue selling women’s clothes from 1 December.
