A solution to the superfluity of rubbish at the end of the towpath

You’d think the provision of a new public waste bin at Strand on the Green was not really worth writing about.

It’s hardly ‘hold the front page’ worthy, even in August.

Au contraire Raquel, as Del Boy used to say. Considering the disgusting mess the towpath was in by the end of most weekends, the provision of an additional waste bin is a major cause for celebration in what the Council likes to call ‘South Chiswick’.

We used to have two bins you see, at the end of the tow path, where locals and visitors like to commence their stroll along the river, depositing their rubbish as they go.

One was burned down, presumably by vandals, or maybe just by the casual discarding of a cigarette, since when the one remaining bin has been woefully inadequate.

Fortunately for the residents of Strand on the Green, one of their elected councillors has been elevated to the position of Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, and was able to have a quiet word with Hounslow Highways about it.

They duly delivered the extra bin on Thursday, which The Chiswick Calendar has unofficially named the Cllr Amy Croft tribute bin, in recognition of her services to waste management.

Posing with the Hounslow Highways crew on Thursday, she told The Chiswick Calendar:

“Whilst it is important that residents and visitors work with us to dispose of their waste responsibility, it is the Council’s responsibility to ensure there are adequate facilities to allow them to do this.

“Following concerns raised by both The Chiswick Calendar and the Strand on the Green Association about capacity, I was pleased to be able to organise a replacement bin from Hounslow Highways”.
