No. 28 on the artists trail – Jenny Price’s studio on Chiswick Mall

Next weekend is one of my favourite weekends of the year in Chiswick – it’s Artists At Home weekend. Pick up a booklet or look on their website to see who is showing where and plot your route to visit painters, textile artists, jewellers, sculptors and photographers.

A little light lunch on the way round perhaps, a glass of wine or two …

One of my favourite studios to visit is Jenny’s Price’s, in one of my favourite locations – Chiswick Mall. Mario’s deli for lunch perhaps, the weather should be good enough for home-made ice cream.

Jenny’s studio is interesting too. While most people show their work in their homes, Jenny has a purpose-built studio.

Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden, who set up Artists At Home more than fifty years ago, lived at Durham Wharf on Chiswick Mall, which at the time was something of an artists’ colony. They bought St Peter’s Wharf with the express intention that artists should live and work there.

It is a condition of sale when you buy there that you can prove you are a professional artist. There is one artist, Barbara Brown, still living there from Julian and Mary’s time. Durham Wharf, where they lived is currently being renovated to create new studios, with the idea of attracting a new group of young artists.

Only two of the seven current artists are opening their studios this weekend to show their work: Jenny Price and Ben Johnson. You can read more about Ben’s work here:

Jenny Price

Jenny has had her studio there since 2013. Her studio overlooks the River Thames, which inspires her work:

“I love the landscape where the sea meets the land because you never quite know from hour to hour how it will look. I prefer tidal water because there is nothing that’s static. It’s changing all the time, and I love what it reveals underneath”.

Recently she has been painting salt marshes, and she has finished a series of paintings made travelling down the river Meuse in France, to its estuary in the Netherlands. She has also painted a series based on personal loss – that of a young person who died last year – and a series called ‘brilliant women’.

Jenny uses acrylic on canvas, and she makes open weaves on her own loom, which she incorporates into her pictures.

Jenny’s studio is number 28 on the Artists At Home map, which is to be found at St Peter’s Wharf, Chiswick Mall, W6 9UD.
