Barnes Bridge Walkway delayed by a month

The Barnes Bridge Walkway will likely be completed a month later than planned, according to Knights Brown, the company in charge of the build.

The new pedestrian bridge was originally meant to be finished by April or May 2022, but “unexpected developments” have meant completion is taking a little later than planned. The completion date has been pushed back to June.

Sean Hebden, South East Divisional Director for Knights Brown also told The Chiswick Calendar the company has overcome the problems of resource procurement and “inflationary issues”. But he admitted there had been some unknowns when installing the bridge’s foundations, which seem to have delayed progress. Sean said now that all work is occurring above ground, the project should run “like clockwork”.

Sean said:

“There’s quite an unknown putting foundations in the ground, you don’t quite know what’s there. We’re out of the ground now, so people can start to see some of the progress that’s being made which is a nice place to be.”

Once completed, the bridge will be a continuation of the tow path on the north bank of the River Thames, going underneath Barnes Railway Bridge. The Thames Path in Dukes Meadows currently is curtailed by the bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists face a long detour, which takes them away from the river, taking a route through a narrow tunnel under a railway before looping back up to the river.

Dukes Meadows is one of the largest open spaces in London, offering open access to the Thames via the Thames Path. The new walkway promises views of the river and the Dukes Hollow nature reserve, a natural tidal foreshore that contains diverse waterside flora and is home to two nationally rare snails.
