Seven-bedroom property on Chiswick Mall owned by the rich and famous is up for sale
Walpole House, a magnificent Georgian mansion in Chiswick with a rich history, is for sale for £16.5 million.
The grand residence, located on Chiswick Mall and boasting spectacular views of the River Thames, has been home to a diverse group of owners throught its history, including a royal mistress, prominent politicians and a well-known fashion designer. With its expansive half-acre gardens and remarkable architectural features, Walpole House is a house of character.
“The proportions of the rooms, with their astonishing ceiling heights, are truly magnificent,” a spokesperson for the estate agents said. Every room exudes its own unique charm, with interesting decorative detail.
While the house has Tudor origins, it underwent a transformation in the early 18th century when Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, made it her home. As a long-term mistress of King Charles II, she bore him five children. Later, the belonged to Thomas Walpole, a prominent banker, Member of Parliament, and nephew of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole.
Walpole House then took on a new role as a boys’ boarding school, attended by novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. It was during his time there that he drew inspiration for the early sections of his literary masterpiece, Vanity Fair, in which the heroine, Becky Sharp, attends Miss Pinkerton’s academy for young ladies.

“It is quite simply the best house in Chiswick”
In 2006, celebrated fashion designer Jasper Conran acquired the property for £7.25 million. Conran embarked on an extensive renovation project, enhancing the house’s charm and selling it off for £12.5 million just two years later.
“He Conranned it,” said Christopher Bramwell, a director of Savills. “Jasper truly brought out the house’s original features and transformed it from its slightly dilapidated state to its present splendour.”
Under the current owners’ stewardship, the 8,762 square foot residence received further enhancements, including a new kitchen, dressing rooms, meticulous garden landscaping, and stylish redecoration. The house now features a beautiful and harmonious blend of traditional and modern aesthetics.
The owners have made the difficult decision to part ways with their beloved home, as they are now spending more time in Europe than in London.
“They adore the house, but their visits have become sporadic,” explained Mr. Bramwell. “It’s an exceptional family home, but they feel it’s best to sell as they can no longer justify keeping it while being away.”
As Walpole House prepares to embark on its next adventure, potential buyers can expect to inherit a residence steeped in history, luxury, and architectural grandeur. ‘With its idyllic location and impeccable renovations, this awe-inspiring mansion stands ready to create new memories for its fortunate future owners’.
“It is quite simply the best house in Chiswick, the trophy house of Chiswick with the biggest garden in Chiswick,” said Mr. Bramwell.
