Brentford West councillor Guy Lambert joins Green Party

Hounslow councillor Guy Lambert has joined the Green Party, becoming the borough’s first Green councillor

The Brentford West representative announced his defection on November 5, having sat as an Independent Socialist since leaving the Labour group in January. He confirmed he will stand as a Green candidate in next May’s local elections.

Lambert, who was first elected in 2015, left Labour following a suspension over his public criticism of how the council handled delays to the Brentford Project redevelopment and their impact on local traders. His suspension was upheld until January 22 this year, after which he formally resigned from the Hounslow Labour Group.

“The policies and approach of the Green Party would provide a welcome improvement on the increasingly undemocratic approach of the Labour administration,” Lambert said in a statement.

“I like the policies, and particularly the Green values: honesty, fairness, efficient and competent management, empathy, working for you.”

He also stated: “As a councillor I am dedicated to improving Brentford and I believe I have a very strong image amongst those who care. Now expelled, some time ago I decided to stand next year as an Independent Socialist, but after discussions with friends in the Green Party and its now more openly left wing policies, I joined the Green Party and I am hoping to stand next year as a Green candidate.”

His concerns centre on Brentford’s development, particularly the closure of Watermans Arts Centre and the future of the old Brentford police station site.

“I want the redeveloped Brentford to focus on our assets: our people, our quirky creative industries, our wonderful river and canalside location as well as our unique spirit,” he said.

Responding to Lambert’s criticisms of the administration’s approach to Brentford, council leader Shantanu Rajawat defended Labour’s record in the area.

“We’re committed to making Brentford not just a great place to live, but a place to feel proud of,” he said. “That’s why we are building a new world-class arts centre on the site of the old police station.”

The announcement of Guy Lambert’s decision to join the Greens came on the same day as Southwark councillor Kath Whittam also switched from Labour to the Greens. Labour currently holds 52 of Hounslow Council’s 61 seats.

The May 2026 local elections will be Guy Lambert’s first contest as a Green candidate.
