Three cars and traffic island damaged in crash

A bus crash on South Parade, which destroyed the bike racks on the traffic island and damaged multiple stationary vehicles, “shook the neighbourhood” according to an eyewitness.

The 94 bus ploughed into a row of stationary cars at around 6.50pm on Friday (14 October) just after it had set off on its journey into London from the end of journey rest point by the Duke of Sussex pub. The accident happened on South Parade at the junction with Fisher’s Lane.

A local resident who heard the crash and witnessed the immediate aftermath told The Chiswick Calendar the bus collided with a parked Nissan Note and dragged it across the traffic island, damaging a bollard and destroying the metal bike racks, before smashing into traffic which had come to a standstill along South Parade.

They heard the driver say  the brakes had failed.

The windshield of the bus was shattered by the crash and three cars were damaged in the collision: a Ford Focus, a Tesla and the Nissan Note, as well as an e-scooter. There were some minor injuries and the eyewitness said the bus driver was “visibly shook up”.

“It’s a miracle nobody was killed”

The eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, told The Chiswick Calendar:

“I was at my window overlooking the park when I first heard a bang, which usually indicates that the bus is going certain speed when it hits the kerb, so that wasn’t unusual but it did sound slightly faster than usual. I still didn’t look up – I then looked up moments later when I saw a blur essentially with sparks flying across two rows of traffic …

“It’s a miracle nobody was killed. The police didn’t come out till 30 to 40 minutes after the incident, which is also very worrying. The whole neighbourhood came out to check if there were any casualties and the clear up didn’t end till 2.30am, when the roads were closed off and the pick up trucks came to recover the damaged vehicles, one of which was a very expensive Tesla.

“It definitely shook the neighbourhood.”

RATP, the French company which operates buses on this route confirmed the crash had happened but did not offer any further comment.

Transport for London told us:

“While the few injuries from this collision are thankfully very minor, this is a concerning incident that must have been frightening for those involved. We are supporting the operator with their investigation into what happened.”
