Richard Bradbury, Children of London photographer
Profile by Bridget Osborne
‘Children of London’ is a unique project by photographer Richard Bradbury. Each year he takes pictures of hundreds of London children. The portraits, which create a unique record for future generations of Londoners, are published annually in a limited edition of 500 stylishly bound hardback copies, featuring images of up to 200 children. The first three copies are presented to Her Majesty the Queen, the Prime Minister and the Mayor of London; the rest are sold or auctioned in aid of Great Ormond St hospital appeal. So far he has raised more than £70,000.
He is always on the lookout for children to photograph for the next edition, which is published each year in December. He’s searching for children aged 0-12 years, representative of all walks of life, from all backgrounds, in every London borough. “All creeds, colours and ethnicity are welcome and don’t forget to include siblings” he says. The front cover of the first book was his own daughter Camille, who is now 20. He likes to photograph the children in a background which has special meaning for them. All he asks of parents is that they make a donation of at least £50 to the charity.
