“Amazing achievement”

On receiving the trophy, Zamaine Ismail said:

“This is an amazing achievement for our team. I am a second-generation barber, straight out of school into trade and this is such a huge honour. To be recognised in these prestigious awards feels incredible. I would like to thank everyone for their support and especially to my team for their hard work. We are trying to grow and progress our business so this award will definitely open up lots of new opportunities.”

Jayne Lewis Orr, Executive Director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards said:

“This year’s entries prove once again that the British hairdressing industry is brimming with passion and a desire to push boundaries and inspire others. Our finalists each displayed creative flair and business acumen, combined with a thirst for success and refusal to compromise on their ambitions.

“In winning this category West and Hunter has demonstrated a grooming business that impresses across the board – from a strong brand identity and loyal clientele to its approach to training and the progression of its team. I’m delighted to see West and Hunter – Gentlemen’s Grooming Club’s hard work and talent recognised at this level.”

The start of Zamaine’s business was particularly hard as he opened during the pandemic. From the start he has tried to make the experience of a visit to West & Hunter something more than just a trip to the barber by creating the atmosphere of a gentlemen’s club.

He won the award in the face of tough competition. In 2020-2021, the hair and beauty industry generated over £4.6 billion in turnover for the UK economy. The number of hairdressing, barbering and beauty business continues to grow year on year, and there are now over 48,000 hair and beauty business in the UK, an increase of 5% from the previous year.

In 2021/2022 around 7,000 people started hairdressing and barbering apprenticeships in England, according to the NBHF 2022 industry report.
