Chiswick Cheese Market featured in global food magazine
Chiswick Cheese Market
Hi ya’ll, come and visit our cheese market
The prestigious American magazine Food & Wine, which describes itself as ‘the global authority on food and drink culture’ has discovered the Chiswick Cheese Market.
They have just published an article to their millions of readers under the headline: ‘There’s a neighbourhood in London with a whole market dedicated to cheese’.
Pamela Vachon writes: ‘London’s Chiswick neighborhood, (pronounced like “chizzick”) is a 20-minute tube ride west from central London and is most often described by those that promote the area as “leafy”…
‘From its history in shaping modern London drinking culture, to becoming a neighborhood that champions British artisan cheese in a singular way, Chiswick deserves a spot on the list of unique London neighborhoods worth visiting, especially for those whose itineraries revolve around discovering the next great bite or sip.
‘I pilgrimage to Chiswick for its monthly cheese market every third Sunday’.

She praises the ‘volunteer-run organization that sponsors the market’ for their ‘educational’ input as well as their organisational skill:
‘Visit the HQ stall for potential samples of a newly minted British cheese, something experimental or award-winning, or a comparative tasting of cheddars in different stages of aging’.
She also suggests visitors check out our Fuller’s pubs, Sipsmith and our Michelin starred restaurant La Trompette while they’re here.

Time Out featured Foster Books a couple of weeks ago in their list of London’s top 40 bookshops, so if the sun is out this weekend we might be getting a few more visitors.

“When we set the cheese market up one of our aspirations was to increase footfall for the High Road”
Lucy Cufflin, one of the founders of the cheese market and one of the joint organisers, told The Chiswick Calendar she was delighted visitors to London were being encouraged to come:
“I think this is great for the area. When we set the cheese market up one of our aspirations was to increase footfall for the High Road. Before Covid the High Road was a bit of a mess. It picked up with the introduction of the markets and we wanted it to stay vibrant”.

Delthia P, food & beverage manager at the Room2 ‘hometel’ across the road told us the markets are great for their visitors.
“Typically when guests wake up on a Sunday they will realise there’s a market and go over an have a look. It allows our guests to feel at home. It’s different each week, so it’s good for the staff too”.
Food & Wine magazine celebrated 40 years in 2023 and reaches around seven million readers each month, sharing ‘recipes, experiences, and culinary talent in the world, inspiring and empowering curious food-obsessed people to eat, drink, host, and travel better’.
Thanks Pamela, and welcome Food & Wine readers! Come and see what delights Chiswick has to offer.
Ben Bullman-Bell, general manager at the George IV told me the markets are a “massive boost” for Chiswick, both for local people and for them as a business.
“Our footfall has massively increased [since the markets were introduced] and it’s nice to have a point of difference”.
They already have a faithful American clientele.
“There is quite a big community of Americans who live round here. We have celebrated Thanksgiving for the past three years and every year it’s grown. Last year we did 96 covers, mainly Americans, and we would be delighted to welcome more of them”.
