Chiswick Cheese Market – Sunday 20 August

A Chiswick tale…

A fabulous lady called Lucy bought a packet of seeds from a lovely man called Alfonso at The Chiswick Cheese Market. She planted the seeds and green shoots soon grew. She looked after the plant in a pot on her patio and by August she was harvesting beautiful unusual little fruits. She pickled them, waiting for autumn to come so she could share her home-grown gherkins with her friends alongside a lovely warming, ooey-gooey raclette. The End

It’s not me – it’s Lucy Lee-Tirrell of the cheese market team and she has tended her seeds she bought from @Collanverdefarm stall back in March.  Alfonso is back with us after a visit to their olive farm in Italy and I for one have his fabulous smoked olive oil on my shopping list – it is simply to die for!

So the moral of this little tale is…  Cheese Market shopping tip alert – keep your eyes peeled as we try and bring you all sorts of goodies to go alongside the bounteous selection of cheese that is always on offer… Sometimes you might have to add a little love of your own but always worth the effort!

Vote for the ‘people’s favourite’ cheddar

So, back to the here and now – Join us on market HQ this month for a very exciting ‘preview tasting’ of all the Cheddars in ‘The Great British Cheddar Challenge’ – What is that I hear you cry? It’s happening on Satrurday 16 September, online, at 7pm and is aiming to be the biggest ever joint cheese tasting.

You can sign up at our market to take part on the night and vote for the ‘people’s favourite’ cheddar. What is more, at the market, we have all six of the cheddars that will be up for the vote, so you can get a little early ‘taster’ (pun intended) of the event to come!

The tasting is the brainchild of our much-loved trader, James Grant (@no2poundst) driven by his passionate cry to promote traditionally-made Artisan British Cheddars.

It’s a blind tasting, so if you sign-up to take part you will receive a pack of six numbered, but not named, cheddars to taste along with the expert panel (including our very own Abigail Pitcher) hosted by Marcus Brigstocke. Then and only then do you get to add your vote. For more info on the event go

See you on Market HQ for a free sampler of all six cheddars.

New Traders at the Market

@thelymingtoncheesestore is joining the market and bringing some cheeses along from their neck of the woods… or neck of The New Forest to be more precise.

Here are a few of the cheeses you can expect to find on their stall this month – Isle of Wight Blue, Isle of Wight Soft, Lyburn Old Winchester, Lyburn lightly oak smoked, Lyburn garlic & nettle, Lyburn Stoney Cross, Dorset Blue Vinny, Rosary Dazel ash goat log, St Ella goat crottin, Little Lepe goat crottin, Ford Farm Truffler, Truffle Hounds New Forest Truffle Brie – Wow – welcome to Cheesewick.

@oxfordcheeseco are on their way with their very own fabulous cheeses – Oxford Blue Cheese, Oxford Isis Cheese, College White Cheese, Cerne Abbas Cheddar, Oxford Dolce Cheese. Plus their famous Oxford sauce and crackers. I can’t wait.

@sicilliafredda will join us with their own olive oil and Sicilian Pecorino and will be offering handmade burrata bruschetta to take away – I bet you don’t get far before you have to tuck into those!

Our cheese recipe of the month is the fabulous Zac’n’Cheese by Jasmine Hemsley. Thank you @CKBK for our cheese recipe as always.

Jo Pratt to host cook stage at Pub in the Park

Team news …

Our very own Jo Pratt is hosting the cook stage all weekend at Pub in the Park – she is simply brilliant – more info

AND our lovely Donna Freed will be chatting to Jeremy Vine about her astonishing book Duplicity, at the Chiswick Book Festival on Sunday 10 September … And you presumed that we were all about cheese? We all have full time careers outside of The Cheese Market and Donna’s book is a must read. To book a place at this event:

Abi Pitcher and I were asked to join as judges at the International Cheese and Dairy awards – we knew all our studying with the Academy of Cheese would pay off one day! We were thrilled to be part of the event and watch this space for more judging and tasting.

So, back to the moral of my little tale at the beginning, to look out for things we bring you that might seem a little left of field. We have an unusual trader joining the market – it’s not cheese, it’s not chutney or crackers, or seeds or oil… it’s a board game – welcome

it’s all about having fun and eating cheese – what could be better?

I’m sure, like me, you will just have to come along to find out what this is all about – see you at Cheesewick on Sunday 20 August, 9.30am – 3pm.

Lucy Cufflin, Chiswick Cheese Market Team

When you come to buy cheese this month bring something along with you to do some good …….

We’re teaming up with The Upper Room this month and our HQ will be a collection point for desperately needed items. Why not have a little sort out and see if you have any unwanted men’s clothing or shoes?

Pasta, oil and cans also welcome – Bring it along to HQ, we’ll see that it gets to The Upper Room.

Together we can make a difference!
