Mother and daughter team ‘In the Garden’ celebrate win

‘In the Garden’, a west London plant shop who have a regular stall at Chiswick Flower Market have won a gold award at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.

Holly and Nikki Barsby are a mother and daughter team who have a background in horticulture and floristry and specialise in plant and container gardens. They combine their skills to design, plant and dress your garden, window box or flower bed.

Their work at the Chiswick Flower Market led them to meet Rob Hardy, who with his wife Rosy has won an astonishing 24 consecutive Gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Market. Rob and Rosy retired from Chelsea themselves last year, but Rob has gone on to mentor Holly and Nikki.

Holly told The Chiswick Calendar:

“It felt amazing to win at the Chelsea Flower Show. We were extremely proud. In the past we only thought about taking part in the show but to win gold is a dream come true.”

They won the award for their houseplant studio ‘ Maximalist Verdure’, a scene set in ‘an eclectic city apartment’ which celebrated ‘individual style and the beauty of plants in compact living spaces.’

Drawing inspiration from the Victorian era, their exhibit used plants such as Aspidistras, but also ‘contemporary tropical treasures, lush layers of foliage are accented by flowering exotics, succulents, cacti, and edibles, all presented in our repurposed garden brocante containers’.

In the Garden have been part of the Chiswick Flower Market from the start and also have stalls at Golborne and Portobello markets as well as their flower shop.

“The Chiswick market is really well organised and there is a great group of traders” said Holly.

“The mix of horticultural knowledge is another reason as to why we enjoy working there. We are having a break now between now and autumn from the market but we’re looking forward to going back.”

On being mentored by Rob she said:

“It’s awesome. It’s an absolute pleasure to work with someone with a wealth of knowledge. He is a mentor for us but now he’s also a friend.”

Holly and Nikki’s work takes them to the NEC in Birmingham later on this month. They have been invited to take part in BBC Gardeners World Live from the 13-16 June. Holly told The Chiswick Calendar:

“We’ve never done it before, our preparation for the event has begun and we are looking forward to showing our work.”
