Solar-powered post boxes have a digitally activated drawer to take parcels

The first ‘post boxes of the future’ are being introduced in Chiswick in Devonshire Road and Edensor Road.

Royal Mail announced at the end of August it would be installing 3,500 solar-powered post boxes across the UK, with solar panels on the top to power a digitally-activated drawer, so customers could use the postboxes for small parcels as well as letters.

Chiswick has 71 post boxes listed by the Royal Mail. They have not said how many of them they intend to replace with the new style boxes, but they hope they will enable the Royal Mail to compete with the proliferation of other delivery services which have sprung up in competition in recent years.

The Royal Mail says this is the “biggest redesign in its 175-year history” and that it was “on a drive” to expand its parcel services and make them “as convenient as possible”.

For the time being the two post boxes in Devonshire Road and Edensor Road are out of service until the new ones are installed.
