Napoli on the Road wins ‘Top pizzaria in the world’ award

Napoli on the Road in Chiswick has won the award for the top pizzaria in the world.

Michele Pascarella, owner and head chef of the restaurant in Devonshire Road, has won multiple awards before, but never taken the top slot when competing against Italian pizza makers.

Three of the top five pizzerias in the world are Italian according to the Top Pizzerias in the World guide, one is in New York, but the one in the top slot is our local, which also happens to be a member of the Chiswick Calendar Club Card scheme.

“It’s so crazy I don’t know what to say”, was Michele’s reaction when he picked up the award at the ceremony at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples on Tuesday.

“I’m in shock, I probably need to have a few drinks and sit down to process this. I can’t explain how big this is”.

For the past three years Napoli on the Road has won “best pizzaria in Europe outside Italy”, but beating Italian restaurants to the World title is a huge deal.

“I didn’t think we’d have a chance against all the Italian ones”, he said. “But we did it. This is the ultimate honour. I’m over the moon and so proud of all my team”.

Michele, from Maddaloni near Naples, opened a permanent pizzeria in Chiswick in 2019 after starting his journey in 2016 with a three-wheeled Piaggio truck he took to street markets.

He has now opened branches in Richmond and, most recently, at 140 Wardour Street in Soho as well.
