Chiswick residents benefit from hundreds of thousands of pounds of community grants

We seem to be under the misapprehension in Chiswick that Hounslow Council does not spend any money on this end of the borough. The publication of the most recent list of ‘Thriving Communities’ grants showing money given to community organisations over the past 12 years appears to give the lie to that notion.

It’s been party, party, party in Chiswick, with 42 small grants for street parties handed out by the Council, thousands of pounds given to support young and old people, sports clubs, churches and environmental groups amongst others, and some hefty capital expenditure on Chiswick House and Dukes Meadows.

The grants cover everything from an apple press for Abundance London (£500) to netting to prevent cricket balls from Chiswick Cricket Club sailing onto the property of nearby householders (£27,128).

Many streets in Chiswick celebrated the Platinum Jubilee and the King’s Coronation, whose residents’ associations applied for funds. Some just had summer parties or ‘a local street party designed to bring our community closer together’, for which the going rate was between £240 and £1,000, the average being £500.

Abundance London’s Apple Day 2023

Riana and Hogarth Charitable Trust receive £160,000 and £240,000 respectively

If the most original application was from Abundance London for their apple press, the most frequently successful applicants were the Riana Development Foundation Network, with 17 applications totalling more than £160,000, and the Hogarth Charitable Trust and Youth Centre, with 12 applications totalling more than £240,000.

Riana Development Network was set up by people from the African diaspora in Chiswick and aims to help build the capacity of vulnerable people to enable them to become self-reliant and restore their hope for the future.

Established in 2004, Riana was registered as a charity in 2005, initially supporting Africans in LB Hounslow, then gradually growing to include people from all communities. Their mission statement reads: ‘We are guided by the principle ‘leave no one behind’.’

The Council has given them Thriving Community grants for supplementary education projects, football and basketball coaching, health sessions, gardening, music, drama and life skills traning.

The Hogarth Charitable Trust, which runs the Hogarth Youth Centre, is currently providing summer camps for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity of a holiday. They too have received money for a range of after school and holiday activities that include football training, art workshops, and cookery sessions.

One grant was for targeted intervention work through a long term partnership with Chiswick School to prevent exploitation, serious youth violence, criminality, gang activity and anti-social behaviour.

While the list shows some grants for activities that just benefit Chiswick, such as money to create a nature area and outdoor classroom at Cavendish Primary School and funds to restore the Bedford Park war memorial, the list also shows organisations which cover the whole of Hounslow, for whom the address of the ‘beneficiary’ listed is in W4, such as Hounslow Seniors Trust which put on a programme of activities for older people across the borough.

There are grants to the Friends of Turnham Green and the Friends of Harvard Hill for planting bulbs and wildflowers to improve Chiswick’s green spaces, and money for the Bedford Park Society to celebrate their 150th anniversary. The Brownies, Scouts and Sea Cadets are all beneficiaries of small amounts, as is the Chiswick Swans women’s football club.
