Three choirs, a rock band and the steel pan – Chiswick School students go all out to entertain

Chiswick School has launched a community choir, inviting members of the whole Chiswick community to join students at the school for some big production numbers. Their first production will be Beethoven’s 9th Choral work at 6pm on Saturday 16 November in Chiswick School sports hall.

Featuring the school’s top choir, Chiswick Voices, the singers led by choirmaster Zac Moxon will be performing with Kew Sinfonia, conducted by Daniel Hogan. Tickets (adults £15, students £5, children under 14 and Chiswick students free), are available from ticketsource.

The concert is in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony. By the time he wrote this, his final symphony, profound deafness that had completely overtaken him. Despite the struggles he encountered as a result, he still managed to create one of the most epic masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire.

Ode to Joy, in the symphony’s last movement, is one of the best-known and instantly recognisable melodies ever composed.

‘At its premiere performance, Beethoven had to be turned round to face the audience so he could see their wildly enthusiastic and appreciative applause.  And to this day, 200 years on, the 9th symphony has since remained an enduringly popular and frequently performed work,’ say the organisers.

Students from Chiswick School will be performing at community events all over Chiswick in the news few weeks, starting with the switching on of the Christmas lights at 5pm on Tuesday 19 November outside Hogarth’s statue in Chiswick High Road.

The Performing Arts Choir (years 7 – 13) Christmas carols and invite you to come and sing with them.

Rock band ‘No Refund’ playing at City Barge

One of the school’s rock bands, No Refund, will be playing on Wednesday 27 November at the City Barge pub at Strand on the Green.

Carols at Chiswick House and Chiswick Flower Market

The Performing Arts choir will be singing carols on the steps of Chiswick House on Saturday 30 November at 1pm

Then again on Sunday 1 December at Chiswick Flower Market in Old Market Place, outside George IV pub at 1pm.

The Chiswick School Steel Pan will be performing on Sunday 1 December at Chiswick House at 2pm.

On Wednesday 4 December at 6.30pm the school’s Performing Arts Department’s Year 11 group, led by Tommy Robinson, is staging a production of The Government Inspector, as they are studying Absurdist theatre. Written by the Russian dramatist and novelist Nikolei Gogol in 1836, the original runs at three hours long.

“This version has been cut down to an hour,” says Tommy. “It’s incredibly contemporary and very funny. It reads like a modern production.”

Tickets to the production are free, just turn up on the door at Chiswick School on the night.

More carols on Thursday 5 December, this time the full blown Carols by Candlelight service at 6.30pm at St Nicholas Church in Old Chiswick, highlighting the Chiswick Voices choir.

Duck Pond Market, Chiswick House

And yet more carols on Saturday 7 December at 1pm with the Performing Arts mass choir at the Duckpond Market in the grounds of Chiswick House.
