City Harvest London
Volunteer Chiswick: City Harvest London
City Harvest London is a registered charity operating across London from their warehouse in Acton. The goal of City Harvest London is to put surplus food from restaurants and supermarkets to use by distributing it to organisations around London which feed the hungry. They have a refrigerated fleet of vans which collect food from supermarkets, restaurants, manufacturers and other food business, and distributes it to any community programme which serves meals to vulnerable people.
Through the work of City Harvest London, people facing obstacles such as food poverty, homelessness, and domestic abuse will have access to a nutritious meal. To date, the charity has served more than 6,000,000 meals to Londoners and because the food has not gone to waste, it has also prevented over 8,000 tonnes’ worth of greenhouse gas emissions.
City Harvest believes that the first step in tackling food waste and food poverty is to invest in individuals and in the community. Not only do they work to feed those suffering from food insecurity, but they also believe in providing opportunities to educate the wider public about food insecurity and food waste. The volunteer programme is integral to its operation and enables them to deliver over 30 tonnes of surplus food per week to Londoners in need.
