Crime drops in London – but by less in Hounslow and Ealing than elsewhere in the city

London neighbourhood crime falls by 15% over the last year – but not in Ealing and Hounslow

The Metropolitan Police and City Hall have released new figures which reveal that neighbourhood crime in London has declined by 15% in the past year.

The drop is not as significant in Hounslow and Ealing. The decrease in Ealing is negligible with only 1% fewer crimes in the past 12 months than last year. In Hounslow, the decrease is 9.7%.

Central to this fall is the drop in recorded cases of personal robbery, theft and vehicle offences. The 15% dip is equivalent to 35,000 fewer offences than last year recorded across the capital.

The statistics for Ealing and Hounslow crimes compared with last year are:

• Ealing: 82 fewer crimes
• Hounslow: 558 fewer crimes

Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith & Chiswick, said the statistics represented:

“a significant achievement by the Metropolitan Police, the Mayor of London, the boroughs, safer neighbourhood teams and residents working together to make our streets safer”.

There were variations between boroughs he noted. Reported crime in Hammersmith & Fulham is down by 20%.

“Chiswick is a relatively low crime area but figures only tell part of the story and any victim of crime is one too many”, he added.

The decrease in crime varies drastically between boroughs. Top of the chart is Westminster, where neighbourhood crime has fallen by more than 40%.

Phone thefts halved in the West End, after Met Police doubled patrols in the area.

Their largest ever operation against phone theft resulted in 13,000 fewer mobile phones being stolen across London.

The Metropolitan Police say they are cracking down on crime in London.

Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley commented:

“The figures are clear: London is safe and getting safer each year”

The Met were using ‘cutting edge technology’, he added, to bring criminals to justice’.

This includes live facial recognition cameras, drones and high-powered E bikes to improve the identification of suspects and to more effectively disrupt crimes when they are taking place.

The Metropolitan Police say they are cracking down on crime in London. The Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, refutes recent criticism of the crime levels in London and has launched a seven million pound campaign to tackle ‘online disinformation’.

The Mayor has said:

“We know how many people online have been trying to talk London down – but the evidence is clear, London is one of the safest global cities in the world.

“We’ll continue working together to build a safer London for everyone”.
