Discount supermarket chain Aldi to open a branch at Kew Retail Park

Expanding discount supermarket shopping in south-west London

The discount supermarket chain Aldi is opening a branch at Kew Retail Park.

The German multinational is now the UK’s fourth largest supermarket, with over 1,050 stores across the UK and a workforce of 45,000.  Aldi Süd came to the UK in 1990, introducing its unique style of ‘no frills’ shopping and markets itself as ‘Britain’s cheapest supermarket’.

The chain is renowned for its bargains, which they are able to offer by keeping the overheads low. The name Aldi is short for Albrecht Discount. Their chief competitors are the other well-known German discount chain Lidl.

Their usp is “Aldi Finds” – centre aisles that feature random specialty items marked down in price, which has been nicknamed the “aisle of shame”. Aldi special buys advertised today (28 January) include a 14 inch stir fry wok for £8.99, a ‘retro’ kettle and toaster for £14.99 each and an air fryer for £29.99.

Aldi will be taking over the unit which previously was Sports Direct, after receiving the required permission from Richmond Council. The new supermarket is expected to provide around 40 jobs.

The whole retail park is due for redevelopment. Developers outlined plans in 2022 for a whole ‘new community’ with 1200 new homes, but discussions have not yet reached the stage of a formal planning application.

The nearest Aldi stores to Chiswick at the moment are in Fulham Broadway and Wimbledon. Lidl has two stores in Acton, one in Ealing Broadway and one in Shepherd’s Bush.
