Does Chiswick have more artists than it does authors?

Famous artists with connections to Chiswick …

Chiswick Book Festival creates a directory of Chiswick artists past and present

The Chiswick Book Festival team is adding a list of artists to its website. Not content with creating an exhaustive list of all the authors who have ever written a book and have any connection with Chiswick, they are now doing the same with artists.

Inspired by the artists trail created by Abundance London when they created the Chiswick Timeline mural underneath the railway bridge on Turnham Green Terrace, and the outdoor art trail put together by the Arts Society Chiswick, St Michael’s & All Angels’ team of volunteers are busily adding artists – and there are many in Chiswick.

Artists at Home have some 100 artists who show their work by opening their homes and studios every year over a weekend in June. The Summer Exhibition is also a venerable art exhibition which has been running for decades as part of the Bedford Park Festival.

The Chiswick Calendar is a relative newbie at this, but even we have been running art exhibitions in Chiswick for nearly ten years. We have just hung the latest one at the Clayton hotel, showing the work of 16 local artists.

Some of the historic artists in the Timeline of Artists and Illustrators

Last summer Chiswick House opened some new artists’ studios, converted outhouses; several of the cafes and shops in Chiswick show local artists’ work, we have several galleries, and the latest addition to the art scene in Chiswick is the Open Art Market which will be taking up the fifth Sunday of the month in Old Market Place on Chiswick High Road.

“There are so many interesting artists here, it’s absolutely fascinating researching them”, Jenny de Montfort told me. We have some very famous artists, including Sir Peter Blake, best known for his Beatles album cover for Sgt Pepper.

The Timeline of Chiswick Writers now has about 500 names on it and the artists are threatening to outstrip it, as she is looking not only at living artists but also historical figures such as William Hogarth, Johann Zoffany and Camille Pisarro.

The timeline of artists will be launched at the Tabard pub on Saturday night, 7 March from 6pm onwards.
