If the Martians had landed at Strand on the Green at 6.30pm on Wednesday 12 August they would have felt right at home.

“These are our people”, they would have thought, “they’re just like us” as they took in the display of colanders, ranging from the plastic to the stainless steel to the vintage glazed stoneware and enamel, being sported as headwear and employed in the rituals of sun worship.

They may have been a bit baffled by the cereal box, but witnessing the quirky customs of the locals is just one of the joys of intergalactic travel.
