Howard Smith has a background in Graphic Design, an art form for the 20C. His talk on The birth of documentary films in the 1930’s is both nostalgic and entertaining. It will be lavishly illustrated by vintage film clips such as the experimental Soviet era Battleship Potemkin. In a mere seven years the GPO Film Unity produced 129 films, including the iconic Night Mail with poetry by WH Auden and music by Benjamin Britten. An extraordinary period which saw immense change, ingenuity and creativity.
Howard Smith is a retired graphic designer whose lecture series mainly cover an extraordinary 50 year period of the C20th which saw immense change, ingenuity and creativity. All are possibly in living memory or near living memory, so they feature a wealth of actual information to support the stories which often show extraordinary creativity sometimes in unbelievable circumstances.
He was born during the Second World War and educated in Scotland followed by an MA from Trinity College, Dublin.
In the 1960s he worked for UK and International Advertising Agencies before starting his own marketing and print company in Canterbury. He was delighted to become an accredited lecturer of The Arts Society in 2017.
