The next Friends of St Nicholas Church event is a poetry and music night, ‘Canon Fodder’ (Feed the Canon! Feed the Soul!). Two or three guest poets are invited to read their own work, plus the work of a poet they feel is underrepresented or underappreciated by ‘the canon’ (however they want to interpret that). A guest (acoustic) musician is also invited to do a set of their own music, plus a cover (along the same lines as above, for the poets).
There will be a short open mic section if time allows. Local poet Lily Blacksell will host proceedings, dressed as a human cannonball, warming up the audience, introducing the artists, etc. The tone is celebratory and high-energy: it is suitable for poetry fans as well as those who need convincing! The poets invited so far are the Chiswick resident, John Clegg, and the 2020 Forward Prize winner, Will Harris.
Lily Blacksell is a poet living in London. Her pamphlet, There’s No Such Thing, was published by ignition press in February 2018. She has an MFA in poetry from Columbia University, where she was also a teaching fellow. Her poems, reviews and interviews have been published by The Poetry Review, Boston Review, BOMB magazine, Rough Trade Books and elsewhere.
