This week’s opera talk, led by Ross Alley, is on Gluck’s “Iphigénie en Tauride”.
Based on a classical Greek myth and set on the shores of Tauris, Christoph Willibald Gluck’s “Iphigénie en Tauride” is a moving opera of family, friendship, and reconciliation. The story follows Iphigénie as she encounters her long-lost brother Orestes, bringing buried memories and difficult choices to the surface. With its powerful simplicity and deeply expressive music, Gluck’s masterpiece explores the enduring human themes of loss, loyalty, and forgiveness.
“Iphigénie en Tauride” was the crowning achievement of Gluck’s career and is scheduled for performances by the English National Opera Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, this season. Discover its rare beauties.
