This Thursday, 24 September, Ross Alley will talk about Verdi’s “Oberto” in this week’s Opera Talk.
Giuseppe Verdi’s first opera, Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1839 and marked the beginning of one of the most influential careers in opera history. Set against a backdrop of political conflict and personal betrayal in medieval Italy, the opera follows the nobleman Oberto as he confronts questions of honour, love, and revenge. Though less stylistically mature than Verdi’s later masterpieces, Oberto already reveals his gift for dramatic melody, expressive vocal writing, and powerful theatrical storytelling, offering an intriguing glimpse of the composer he would soon become.
