This Thursday, 1 October, Ross Alley will talk about Verdi’s “Un giorno di regno” in this week’s Opera Talk.
Verdi’s second opera, Un giorno di regno (“King for a Day”), is a sparkling comic opera of mistaken identities, romantic intrigues, scheming aristocrats and exuberant Italian wit. Verdi’s first attempt at comedy was not a success at its 1840 premiere and the young composer himself was deeply disappointed by its reception. Yet behind its troubled history lies music of remarkable freshness, energy and charm, with lively ensembles, infectious melodies and plenty of theatrical mischief. Was it really the failure history has made it out to be? You might want to see – and, more importantly, hear – for yourself. You may find that Verdi’s youthful comedy deserves another day in court.
