On Sunday 29 May St Nicholas Church will be hosting a special Conversational Evensong at St Nicholas church with Dr Hilary Lines.
Hilary volunteers for the Clewer Initiative which is a project run within the Church of England and which aims to support the church in combatting Modern Slavery.
You can find lots of info on it on their website – theclewerinitiative.org.
In 2019 a staggering 136,000 men women and even children were trapped in modern slavery. The idea is that churches can provide the ‘glue’ which brings together all the various bodies that are involved in addressing this issue.
She is facilitating a training programme called ‘Hidden Voices’. She runs this for groups of churches to help people understand what Modern Slavery is, what forms it takes, how to detect it, and how to prevent it. The aim is to stimulate action locally so that groups of people take on the accountability for broadening awareness and developing projects that address local risks and issues. Some groups run campaigns within their towns, some work with charities that provide support to victims of modern day slavery to help them reintegrate into normal life.
A very important area for churches is to ensure that the people who use the projects that they run – like food banks and night shelters – are fully informed of the risks, since they are potentially vulnerable to being trafficked and so can help to provide victim support and care.
