A unique immersive dining experience at Watermans for one night only.
We are all familiar with how food tastes in our mouths, but can we also experience food through a different sense? Can you feel the sound of water, the smell of metal, the taste of fire or the texture of earth? Artist Martin Butler and five Hounslow based artist collectives present the Chromatic Dinner. Inspired by the Chinese five elements, each course is designed in a different colour. As such, colour, smell, texture, sound and taste are all mixed together in this fully immersive dining experience.
The Chromatic Dinner is a one of a kind immersive dining experience consisting of five courses, each course being based on one sense.
Five senses, five courses
This dining experience challenges the way food influences our emotions, sensations, thoughts, and associations. For the Chromatic Dinner, Martin Butler researched Synaesthesia, a perceptual condition in which the stimulation of one sense triggers an automatic, involuntary experience in another sense. As such, it questions if colour can create emotion, and if that emotion and colour can be enhanced by combining it with other senses.
Every course is inspired by a different colour, corresponding to one of the Chinese elements: Tree, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Quoting synaesthesia, a perceptual condition in which the stimulation of one sense triggers an automatic, involuntary experience in another sense, this special evening holds many sensational surprises.
