Free online talk – Writing John of Gaunt, The Red Prince: a conversation with Helen Carr

September 8 @ 8:00 am5:00 pm BST

In a conversation with the head of medieval records, Dr Sean Cunningham, Helen Carr will discuss how she pieced together and interpreted the life of one of England’s greatest medieval magnates and father of English monarchy.

Helen is a historian, writer, TV producer and author of the bestselling biography of John of Gaunt, The Red Prince: John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster (Oneworld, 2021). Helen is passionate about making history —and how we study history — accessible, on the printed page and on the screen.

She is currently working on a doctorate in medieval history at Queen Mary University London and is due to publish What is History, Now? in September – a volume of essays from various expert historians, edited alongside Professor Suzannah Lipscomb.

What is History, Now? marks the 60th anniversary of Helen’s great-grandfather’s ground-breaking historiography, What is History? published in 1961.

The talk will last approximately 30-40 minutes, followed by a 15 minute Q&A.
