Heritage Talk by Amber Butchart – Boston Manor House

16 May @ 6:00 pm8:00 pm BST

Join Amber Butchart as she takes us through the way fashion in the 19 Century affected wider society.

From Eve’s fig leaf to Hillary Clinton’s pantsuit, the way we choose to clothe our bodies can carry layer upon layer of meaning. Across cultures and throughout history people have used clothing to signify power and status, to adorn and beautify, even to prop up or dismantle regimes. In this illustrated talk, fashion historian Amber Butchart talks us through some of history’s most illuminating dressers to show the importance of communication through clothing.

Focusing on the 19 Century and the Royal Dinner Party at Boston Manor House, Amber’s talk will feature the clothing choices of: Beau Brummell, Byron, Amelia Bloomer, Garibaldi, Karl Marx, Empress Eugenie, William Morris, Countess of Castiglione and Oscar Wilde among others.
