|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, repeating until October 17, 2021

Come to a wonderful evening of Japanese plants, art and culture in the Temperate House as part of Kew’s autumn festival. From dance theatre and live music performances to traditional flower arranging and sake sipping, there’s so much to explore.

Dance theatre by Butoh UK

Dance collective Butoh UK will perform their new work Mujokan throughout the Temperate House, taking inspiration from the surrounding plants.

Butoh-informed dancers and live artists, under the artistic direction of Marie-Gabrielle Rotie, will perform a series of vignettes.

They will embody the flower in its stages of blooming, fragrance and decay, to underscore the transience of all existence.Butoh creates a rich, open space for the audience to enter and explore their thoughts and dreams.

Hanako Motoya ikebana

Ikebana, one of the traditional arts of Japan, is over 600 years old and expresses beauty in space.Ikebana master, Hanako Motoya, will deliver demonstrations throughout the evening culminating in an installation created from multiple works.

You will be able to speak to Hanako as she works, and learn about the ritual art of Japanese flower arranging.

This will include the materials that she uses, how she constructs the arrangements and the inspiration that she takes from nature to realise her creations.

Anchorsong music

Electronic musician and producer Anchorsong AKA Masaaki Yoshida will deliver a series of unique live shows based around his latest album release, Mirage.

The record was ‘constructed with wind instrumentals, choirs, and global sonic particles… [and] fuses intricate rhythms with minimal yet immersive lush interplays of sound to create an auditory odyssey.

Anchorsong is ‘globally recognised for… crafting immersive and rhythmic releases… which spectators have described as “like watching a painter drawing on a white canvas”.
