The music of Duke Ellington has been inspiring jazz vocalist Sarah Moule and pianist Simon Wallace ever since they first discovered jazz. Simon was hooked after seeing the Ellington band when he was 13 years old and Ellington’s music was one of Sarah’s first big ‘jazz obsessions’.
This special show celebrates ‘The Duke’ with a collection of his greatest songs and those of his right- hand man, Billy Strayhorn, two of the most respected and prolific song writers of the jazz era.
Numbers such as “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing” to ‘Mood Indigo’ and ‘I Got It Bad & That Ain’t Good’ to “Do Nothin’ Til You Hear From Me’ and ‘Take The A Train’, show why the Ellington Orchestra’s music has been described as one of the most important contributions to American culture.
Between songs in this upbeat and swinging show Sarah and Simon look at the often enigmatic and always complex man behind the music, the remarkable Duke Ellington.
Sarah and Simon have performed at Ronnie Scott’s, the Southbank Centre and other major venues all over the UK. Sarah also spent six years with the Proms favourite The John Wilson Orchestra and has released five critically acclaimed CDs.
“Long established as one of the best jazz singers in the UK, Sarah Moule is a master at bringing out the heart of a song……..” Helen Mayhew Jazz FM
Simon’s four-decade career spans 26 countries, touring internationally with the Lindsay Kemp Company, recording with Geoff Beck and as musical director for Imelda Staunton, Clare Teal, Ian Shaw and Barb Jungr.
