Join this workshop to learn about Kogin embroidery and create your own piece to take home.
Kogin embroidery is a type of Sashiko or counted thread work, originating in the Northern part of Japan in Aomori Prefecture.
It is stitched on an evenweave fabric from side to side, typically using an uneven number of threads to make up geometric, symmetrical patterns, that are usually in the shape of a diamond.
There are around 45 traditional Kogin patterns known as ‘Modoko’, but there are so many more to discover — learn how to invent and stitch your own modern designs using a simple sheet of gridded graph paper or a computer spreadsheet.
The name ‘Kogin’ derives from the Japanese word ‘koginu’; ‘ko’ meaning ‘small’ and ‘ginu’ meaning ‘wear’ — the name of a Japanese jacket that was often decorated using this technique.
