Local history talk with Andy Scott – Chick ‘Cocky’ Knight

September 4 @ 3:00 pm BST

We are delighted to be welcoming author Andy Scott to Riverside Studios on Saturday 4th September for the celebration of his new book London’s Loveable Villain. The local interest biography celebrates the life of Scott’s great uncle, Arthur Richard George Knight, who was a triple life saver, security guard at Riverside Studios, wrestler, and TV stuntman who went by the name Chick ‘Cocky’ Knight.

A plaque to commemorate Chick’s heroic act of jumping into the river from Hammersmith Bridge to save two people who were drowning, will be installed on Friday 3rd September. We invite you to take a look at the new plaque after the talk.

London’s Loveable Villain is about author Andy Scott’s great uncle; Hammersmith born wrestler and triple lifesaver, Chick ‘Cocky’ Knight. Chick lived in Castelnau, Barnes for many years, and saved 2 people from drowning in the Thames in Hammersmith, June 1930.

One of the first British wrestlers on TV in 1938, Chick fought worldwide from 1932-58, competing with many of the great heavyweights in his field. He was also famously involved in one of the first Wrestler v Boxer contests to be televised, fighting against Heavyweight Champion ‘Bombardier’ Billy Wells at Earls Court in 1938. Chick was also a soldier, a film stuntman and extra, a doorman, security guard at Kensington Palace to Princess Margaret and a security guard at Riverside Studios.

Chick Knight is the only British sports person who was a triple lifesaver – he saved a fellow soldier from drowning in Gibraltar at Catalan Bay in 1924 whilst serving. After 91 years, and following 2 years of campaigning and a petition with nearly 500 signatures, Chick is finally getting a plaque to commemorate his double lifesaving feat in Hammersmith, which is being installed on a bench by the Bridge on the Thames Path in front of Riverside Studios. London’s Loveable Villain was recently featured on Robert Elms BBC Radio London programme.
