Modern Perspectives on Chiswick House as a Mental Asylum

May 25 @ 6:00 pm BST

Between 1892 and 1929 Chiswick House was leased as an asylum and hospital for patients with mental illnesses. Run by the Tuke brothers, Chiswick House Asylum housed between 30 and 40 patients, who lived mainly in the parts of the building which have since been demolished.

The first half of this talk will be by Dr. Tessa Kilgarriff, Curator of Collections and Interiors at Chiswick House & Marble Hill. Drawing on patient casebooks, Tessa explores the Tuke brothers, their patients and the use of the house and grounds for mental health treatment at the turn of the century.

The second half of the talk will be given by psychotherapist Wayne Mertins Brown, who will give a modern perspective on Chiswick House as a mental asylum.

The talk will be 6pm to 7pm, followed by drinks, finishing at 8pm.

Inside the House in the Upper Tribune, please enter via the Portico stairs at the front of the House.
