Online Lecture: The Designs of May Morris

April 12 @ 6:00 pm7:00 pm BST

May Morris was a highly proficient designer. The success of her designs was achieved through a thorough understanding of the relationship between media, form and purpose, and the limitations of craft processes.

In this talk, Thomas Cooper will explore the source material that informed May’s designs – from works of art and historic textiles in her personal collection and in museums, to ornament, craftwork and flora which she encountered during her travels, and the garden and surrounding landscape of Kelmscott Manor.

He will also compare some of May’s designs with those produced by her contemporaries, and discuss the physical making of a design and the processes of transforming a drawn design into a stitched textile.

Thomas Cooper is a PhD Student at the University of Cambridge where he is researching May Morris (1862 – 1938) and Arts and Crafts textiles and designs. Previously, Thomas obtained his BA (Hons) and MA degrees from The Courtauld Institute of Art.
