Jephtha – A gripping biblical tale of faith and sacrifice…
Ross Alley gives weekly opera talks in term time at the Chiswick Memorial Club.
His programme of talks relate to operas currently being performed in London at venues such as the Royal Opera House and the London Coliseum or at opera houses such as The Metropolitan Opera in New York, being relayed ‘live’ in cinemas. Ross’s lectures enrich the experience of going to the opera.
This week his talk will be on Handel’s oratorio Jephtha.
He says it has been estimated that Handel put more notes on paper than any other composer before or since.
“Jephtha is the harvest of his decades of penetration and expression of individual character, the human condition, the natural world and the nature of God, and for many listeners it is the masterpiece among his oratorios.”
Ross will be examining Jephtha on Thursday afternoon in preparation for performances at the Royal Opera House.
Ross has been lecturing on opera for more than 30 years. He has given guest lectures for a number of respected cultural organisations, including the English National Opera, Wigmore Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, London Symphony Orchestra, the Wagner Society, the Gustav Mahler Society, Kenwood, NADFAS, Artstur, Newbury Spring Festival, and the London Jewish Cultural Centre.
