Try your hand at this printmaking technique with the printing press at Hogarth’s House
Unusually for the time, Hogarth made many of his own prints. Learn more about printing and the processes that went into making the prints you see on display in the House. Each workshop will cover Hogarth as a printmaker, the drypoint technique and a hands-on opportunity to print your own uniquely designed plate.
Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique. Intaglio, meaning ‘to incise,’ encompasses printing techniques such as engravings and etchings, which are how Hogarth made his prints, as well as the more modern technique of drypoint. Intaglio printing techniques are the opposite of relief printing, such as lino or woodcuts, and require considerably more pressure to print. Participants will create their own unique design using specialist tools, watch it run through the intaglio press and at the end take home their completed masterpiece.
Suitable for beginners, no previous printmaking experience needed.
Aprons are provided to all participants. Although the inks are mainly washable, please be mindful of the clothing you choose to wear to the workshop.
