One of London’s oldest amateur theatre groups will perform The Birds by Conor McPherson (The Girl from the North Country, The Weir) for a special four-night run in Chiswick between Wednesday 22 June – Saturday 25 June, directed by Paul Smith.

Based (like Hitchcock’s famous film) on the Daphne du Maurier short story, The Birds is a thrilling psychodrama that explores what happens when nature turns against humanity. Birds have turned on humans, few of whom remain. Society has broken down, food is scarce and each person must look out for themselves.

In this gripping thriller, we find two people in an abandoned house, thrown together and figuring out how to survive. But a younger woman turns up and soon the couple’s delicate balance is upset. To further disturb things, a mysterious neighbour also arrives, with unknown intentions. It is a powerful and unforgettable tale of how people can turn on each other when faced with an existential threat.

The show will then transfer to the Edinburgh Fringe for a five-night run in The Annexe Theatre (part of The Space UK) with the same cast. The St Michael’s Players were last at the Fringe in 2019 with their award-winning production of The Long Road, by Shelagh Stevenson, also directed by Paul Smith.
