The latest, and possibly the last, in a long and outstanding series of collaborations between director Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty, The Old Oak continues their moving, life affirming looks at the world, its fragilities and its hopes.
The Old Oak pub is special, the only remaining public meeting space in a once thriving mining community. Landlord TJ is determined to keep it open, but that becomes an even bigger problem after the arrival of a group of Syrian refugees and the pub becomes contested territory…
With true to life performances from Dave Turner as TJ and Ebla Mari as the young Syrian photographer who befriends him, The Old Oak is resonant and timely, angry but compassionately optimistic, and filmmaking at its finest.
