A walk around the riverside neighbourhood of Chelsea and Battersea following the footsteps of painter and printmaker James NcNeil Whistler.
Topics covered include: development of Chelsea from riverside village to desirable London suburb; Artists’ community and studios in Chelsea; production of Whistler’s ‘Thames Set’ of etchings with scenes of the Thames; Whistler’s ‘Nocturne’ paintings;Whistler’s trial with John Ruskin History of Old Battersea Bridge and new Bazalgette replacement Bridge; Development of of Albert Bridge and Battersea Park as a place to promenade by the Thames.
