Fire beside the railway footbridge quickly dealt with

A small fire in the grounds of Strand on the Green Junior School was quickly extinguished by London Fire Brigade on Saturday (15 August).

Smoke from the fire, in the corner of the school’s premises beside the footbridge over the railway, could be seen across the tracks from Chiswick Village.

Network Rail site CCTV camera destroyed

Workmen from Network Rail repairing the bridge on Sunday told The Chiswick Calendar their CCTV camera had been destroyed in the fire. People have been jumping over the fence to cross the railway tracks, finding the footbridge closed, so it is assumed someone doing that threw their cigarette away in the corner of the fencing.

The fire brigade has been putting out lots of grass fires all over London in the past couple of weeks. On 5 August they were called to 200 grass fires in one 24-hour period.

The Government authorised an emergency alert warning of wildfire risk to be sent to millions of people in England and Wales by phone on Friday and people have been urged not to light barbecues, campfires, fireworks or anything else that could spark a blaze while the wildfire risk remains high.
