First look inside the new Chiswick Cinema

Chiswick Cinema opens its doors this weekend for a series of soft launches across the week – free screenings for founder members only – ahead of the full opening on Friday 25 June 2021. The Chiswick Calendar was invited for a look round in the final frantic days of getting the building ready for its public and it’s hard not to share the excitement.

As I walked in there were cleaners hoovering and polishing; a group of new staff having their induction training in the lobby; carpenters putting the final touches to doors; engineers testing the lift; the whole place was a frenetic buzz of very purposeful people just about managing not to get in each other’s way.

Project manager Lyn Goleby, who has taken the cinema through the planning and building stages was hovering in the background like a mother hen as her team – General Manager Kathryn Smith, Food and beverage manager Iggie Panepinto and PR & Marketing manager Katie Gilbert prepare to take over the day to day running of the five screens, restaurant and a private Members’ restaurant and bar.

When I popped in three days before the first group of punters were due to watch the very first film, Katie took time out to show me round, even though she was tearing her hair out trying to get the ticketing system to function as it should.

It was a relief to walk in from the heat to the pleasantly air conditioned building; there’s a lovely new smell about the place and some nice touches in the decor, especially the green wall, which is now blossming nicely.

I can confirm the seats are lovely and comfy – they recline. It’s definitely a place you could feel at home – and can’t bear to think of people dropping icecream on the new uplostery!
