Environment Agency issues flood alert for five west London postcodes

A flood alert has been issued for five London postcodes, including W4.

The Environment Agency has warned the River Thames is likely to flood at high tide between 3.45 am and 7.45 am on Friday 17July from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir, but it has said it does not expect properties to be flooded.

The Environment Agency posted at 6.57 on Thursday (16 July):

“We believe there is a possibility of flooding for Putney Embankment (SW15), Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green (W4), Thames Bank at Mortlake (SW14), Ranelagh Drive (TW1), Friars Lane and Water Lane (TW9), Riverside and The Embankment at Twickenham, and the Towpath below Teddington Lock. Flooding of properties is not expected”.

The river regularly covers the road at Chiswick Mall, making it impassable for the stretch from Church Street to Chiswick Lane South where the Fuller’s Griffin Brewery is, and it regularly comes up over the towpath at Strand on the Green at high tide, but it still catches out unwary motorists who leave their cars parked by the river and do not realise quite how far the tide comes up.

People also try and drive through the water at Chiswick Mall and get stuck when the water floods their engine.

“Astronomical tide levels are rising”, says the Environment Agency.

“The river flow at Teddington Weir is 10 cubic metres per second and is steady. We anticipate the flows to remain steady for the next few days.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.

“Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water”.
