Footballer Joey Barton has to pay Jeremy Vine more than £200,000 after libel case

Barton has to pay for his “calculated and sustained attack” against Jeremy Vine

The former footballer Joey Barton has to pay Jeremy Vine more than £200,000 in legal costs after the broadcaster sued him for libel and harrassment and won.

Barton defamed him on social media, abusing him in a string of posts on Twitter. A judge in the High Court found last May that the terms he used did have a defamatory meaning, and Jeremy was awarded damages totalling £110,000 for the “distress” the remarks had caused him.

Barrister Gervase de Wilde, acting for Jeremy Vine, said that the broadcaster “was deeply alarmed, distressed and upset” by Barton’s actions, which included a “persistent and highly damaging campaign of defamation, harassment and misuse of private information”.

His lawyers agued Barton had mounted a “calculated and sustained attack” against him.

Barton, a former England international, who played for Manchester City and then went on to manage Bristol Rovers, was forced to apologise for his remarks.

The former footballer found out today that he would have to pay a total of £203,172.30 in legal costs.

A specialist court which considers the settlement of costs heard today that Barton had agreed to pay £160,000 of Vine’s costs from the main legal action, but Judge Colum Leonard also ordered him to pay a further £43,172.30 cost incurred in negotiation over the amount he would pay.

Jeremy Vine, who lives in Chiswick, has not commented in the outcome of this latest case.
