Hammonds Butcher & Deli closes

Hike in electricity bills, rates and recession blamed

Hammonds Butcher and Delicatessen by Kew Bridge has closed.

Ken Hammond has been working as a butcher in Chiswick for more than 30 years. He had his own butcher’s shop at Strand on the Green for many years and moved to premises beside Kew Bridge when the apartment complex was built on Kew Bridge Rd, selling up to another company but continuing to work for them.

For the past two years the business, remodelled as a delicatessen and butcher’s, has been owned by John Groves. He told The Chiswick Calendar for the first year it was ok but in the second year he started losing more and more money each month.

“Rates are up, the electric is more than trebling. We’re in recession.”

Christmas this year was a lot quieter than the previous year, he told us, with takings down significantly.

“We had hoped the new flats around the Brentford Stadium would help, but it hasn’t. Each month we took significantly less.”

Betty closed for the first three weeks in January

Betty restaurant in Barley Mow Passage will remain closed for the first three weeks of January as staff take holiday. Staff shortages are a big issue, owner Steve Novak told The Chiswick Calendar.

Betty opened in the summer of 2021, quickly establishing itself as a place for younger people in Chiswick, which shows major sport events on big screens and holds late night events such as  Halloween and New Year’s parties when they can get a late licence.
