The Lyric theatre in Hammersmith has launched a fundraising campaign in which they are asking the community to help raise £50,000 through crowdfunding, to ensure that the theatre can survive and reopen in the near future.

This year the theatre celebrated its 125th anniversary, around the same time as having to close because of the pandemic. They have now been closed for over six months and as a result have lost 75% of their income, which has put ‘incredible financial pressure’ on the theatre.

Organisers have described the fundraiser as ‘one of the biggest challenges in the theatre’s history’ and have called on the community to ensure that the Lyric ‘remains at the heart of Hammersmith for another 125 years’.

‘A vital role’

Nearly two million people have stepped through the theatre’s doors over the last ten years. In better times, Lyric actively encourages theatre-going with free ticket schemes for the local community.

Since 2010 the theatre has given 28,000 free tickets to community groups and those who live and work in Hammersmith and Fulham through the Free First Night scheme. They have also given 22,000 free tickets to local schoolchildren to the annual Panto.

The theatre also opened the Reuben Foundation Wing five years ago, which has helped 180,000 young people have to take part in opportunities and activities through Young Lyric classes and projects.

The Lyric management team says the fundraiser is crucial to ensure that  the theatre can continue to play a’ vital role at the cultural heart of west London’.

‘Any donation’ helps

Below is a video of the Artistic Director of Lyric Hammersmith, Rachel O’Riordan, and the theatre’s Executive Director, Sian Alexander.

‘Our safety curtain is down and the stalls are empty, but we are determined to see our theatre full again and with your help we can make that happen. Any donation, no matter how small, is going to help us survive this critical time and see the Lyric return and this theatre full again. We will reopen the Lyric, but only with your help’ they say.
