Car driver arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after passenger dies in collision with bus

One man has died and two others were taken to hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning (20 August) after a car collided with a bus on Gunnersbury Avenue, just north of Chiswick Roundabout.

Police closed the A406 in both directions as paramedics treated three people at the scene. London Ambulance Service, who received the first call at 12.18 am, dispatched ambulance crews, paramedics in fast-response cars, an incident response officer and other specialists. The first paramedic arrived in under seven minutes.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the passenger of the car, a 38-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the paramedics’ best efforts.

The car driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to hospital. Police say his injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing, though he remains in hospital for treatment. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The bus driver, a 61-year-old man, received minor injuries and was also taken to hospital.

The North Circular was closed until 10.00 am while police examined the scene.

They are appealing for witnesses, CCTV or dashcam footage and have asked anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting CAD141/20AUG.
