A man who threatened to shoot councillors over the introduction of traffic changes in Chiswick  has been ‘spoken to’ by police, The Chiswick Calendar has learned.

Simon Mabbutt, who stood unsuccessfully as a UKIP candidate in Riverside ward in 2014, wrote on Next Door:

“The council members who agreed this most pathetic changes … NEED SHOOTING. I AM HAPPY TO PULL THE TRIGGER. “I think it’s time to find out who and where these imbeciles live”.

Marlene Johnson, one of the organisers of the One Chiswick Facebook group, then told him where he could find their addresses.

Leader of LB Hounslow, Steve Curran told The Chiswick Calendar:

“Ever since the murder of Jo Cox MP, we take this sort of threat very seriously. The Chief Executive has passed it to the police”.

The Council has been told that the Police have carried out an investigation, spoken to Simon Mabbutt and given him “words of advice” and that he apologised to the Police, though he has not apologised to to the councillors concerned.

Steve Curran told The Chiswick Calendar he is “happy with that outcome”.

Marlene Johnson did not receive a visit from the Police. She has told The Chiswick Calendar:
“I categorically do not endorse any kind of violence”.

Asked whether she regretted posting on Next Door where Simon might find the councillors’ addresses, she said: “In hindsight I regret it, given the context in which it’s been taken”.

Cllr Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, told us:

“I’m actually more exercised by Marlene writing this is how you find out where we live than I am about some clown sounding off about shooting people”.

Not long before the comments were posted, he said, he had met her and spent over an hour with her, listening to her comments about potholes in Wavendon Avenue and Dukes Avenue, trying to help her.

“This is a prosperous, middle class woman who has actually met me”.

As well as being one of the organisers of the Facebook group One Chiswick, Marlene is a company director of a lettings agency based in Chiswick and a Director of the Thames Explorer Trust.
