New line could create thousands of jobs and homes in west London

The Mayor of London has set aside funds for the West London Orbital rail line, proposed to link stations on the Elizabeth line with the HS2 route in west London.

In his draft budget Sadiq Khan has ringfenced £400,000 to start the process and, subject to ministerial approval, construction could start on the new transit link as early as 2027.

Mayor Khan said:

“I am delighted that we are moving forward with our plans for the West London Orbital that will improve public transport and deliver economic growth.”

The West London Orbital is a new rail service using existing, underused rail lines in west London that would become part of the London Overground network running from Hounslow towards Hendon and West Hampstead in the north.

The commitment of funds is expected to progress the design of new stations, track upgrades and other infrastructure significantly, and the Mayor’s office will then use the designs to try and persuade the Government and other investors to put in money.

According to City Hall, building the new line could create thousands of jobs and homes, and is expected to deliver approximately £300 million in economic growth in the first ten years of operation.
